In our latest episode of the Laker Film Room Podcast, Pete and I discuss D’Angelo Russell’s wild week which started with him playing poorly, then moved to the bench, then culminated with his return to the first five and a career high 40 point night.
We also touched on Luke Walton’s schemes, Brandon Ingram’s good month of March, and more. Click through to listen to the entire discussion.

Lakers sign David Nwaba to a 2 year deal….Wrong on that one Darius. I like his effort and tenacity. I wish he would rub off on our two leaders.

With the Lakers now signing Nwaba to a 2- yr contract, they need to waive MWP (if the FO has any realistic intentions of looking at other players). And being in the lottery, this is clearly the right time to make this move.
One look at the roster makes MWP the most logical. He is not expected to return next season, and is on a min veteran contract. Goodby Ron, time to look into coaching. Roster development & assessment is the order of the day. You were a valued contributor a few years ago, but its time to join Kobe in retirement.
With Nwaba being a good defender, it fills a team need (most likely as a backup). Lets not stop there. Somehow it would just seem appropriate to replace Artest with another great defensive wing. Oh I forgot, the team already has one, in Deng! Excuse me for forgetting…

This is another great podcast, there was a lot of give and take. I do not think that most of the Russell – Clarkson data is relevant. There is just the one game that they started together with players who could be starters going forward. I think their offensive games complement one another. Clarkson who tends to be myopic is balanced by Russell who does not have the same quickness and hops but can read the floor much better. Both are triple threats with the ball and offer different ways to attack a defense. Their defense is definitely a work in progress but Clarkson is quick enough to do a much better job of staying with his man. He just needs a lot of work on his fundamentals.
The coaching staff is also a work in progress. Luke is still learning the ropes and would benefit from a more seasoned coach as his top assistant. Phil had Tex Winter as his top assistant. Phil respected Tex and Tex was not shy about expressing his opinions. It is not obvious that Brian Shaw serves the same role for Luke. To me, the lack of coaching experience and feedback is seen in the defensive positioning. Also, as Pete pointed out, coaches should be more proactive about the lack of player movement on offense, especially since this offense is supposed to encourage ball movement. The Lakers culture of standing around and watching the shooter is still ingrained. This year they have had Nick and Lou to watch.
