Javaris gets an “A” for the Day: Young Critt got out of the blocks quickly, showing some nice handles and athleticism as well as hitting the game winner at the buzzer. Let’s see if he can build on the mini-hype tonight and show that running the Triangle in high school has sped up his learning curve and could possibly lead to some playing time during the regular season. (Thanks skigi for the link)
Blind Pig and The Pinch Post Revisited: This has been shared in this space before, but I found myself watching it again. It’s the Phil Jackson “In His Own Words” aired in the 05-06 season and it’s the best primer, other than reading Tex’s book, on the intricacies and basics of the Overload, or as we know it, the Triangle Offense.
Back to the Old School: Some of you may have caught this elsewhere (Deadspin is where I saw it), but Tom Newell, son of legendary coach and Big Man Camp originator Pete, has been running exhibitions with college, international, and NBDL players and coaches using an 11 foot rim. “Newell thinks it will decrease dunking and the emphasis on individual play and increase teamwork and passing.â€
Not sure why we need to decrease dunking, as that seems to be one the most exciting plays in sport, but the emphasis on team play would benefit the game greatly. Isn’t this what basketball looked like in the 50’s?
Rumor of the Day: “Fisher, according to NBA front-office sources, is no longer even considering other teams and is on track to re-sign soon with the Lakers.” Marc Stein, grain of salt, discuss. (Thanks DYi for the link)
Recess: Jack “I can’t hit mute fast enough” Haley and a piece from this year on the Lakers’ and their Tattoos. Check out Little Wheats reppin’ the 619.
Update: Take this for what it’s worth…
“Last week, Bartelstein said guard Derek Fisher would consider the Cavs, but that may have changed. On Monday, Bartelstein said he was no longer Fisher’s agent.”
I’m guessing it could mean he is coming back and on the cheap.

the tat on lamar’s chest breaks my heart.
LakerFan says
Are you saying Stein is lying Kurt? grain of salt discussion? come on now.
we all knew all along Fisher was coming to LA. this news isn’t coming from Hoopsworld or a forum its coming stright from a credible person.
skigi says
lakerfan,
I wouldn’t necessarily say that Stein is lying. I agree with you that he is a (usually) credible person. The reason some of us have some doubts about the rumor is that ESPN is becoming known for having its writers (Bucher, Gray, etc.) come out with some huge “breaking news” story that ends up being a complete rumor. Like when Bucher kept reiterating Kobe’s trade demand and saying there is 0% chance of him in Laker uniform next year while Kobe was keeping quiet and now Kobe is over it. Then Jim Gray broke the 3-team KG deal where Stoudemire was going to Atlanta and that turned out to be bogus.
ESPN does tend to know things very quickly sometimes and they are right alot of times, but their blunders have given them a reputation of being not 100% credible. We will all believe the Fisher story when a Laker front office person says something.
LakerFan says
This isn’t Ric Bucher or Jim Gray though.
usually Marc Stein is on track of things.
skigi says
I agree. That’s why I am leaning toward believing this story. Although his colleagues have screwed up, I can’t really remember Stein screwing up. Hopefully he is right and Fish is coming back. That would be awesome.
LakerFan says
Skigi yeah… important thing is now after we sign D-Fish are other moves on the way aswell?
we need a heck of a lot more then a D-Fish signing.
anonymous says
if the Fish signing is the biggest FO move this summer…well, let’s just not even think about that
Gatinho says
Not saying he’s lying, just saying nothing is done until it’s done. Obviously I believe it to a certain extent or I wouldn’t have posted it.
Ap says
I really hope they don’t overpay him…maybe DFish will take a hometown discount? I also hope this is the nail in the coffin for moving Farmar/Critt perhaps for a Ron Artest/something bigger type.
SL says
Agreed, hopefully they aren’t giving him the full MLE.
Carter says
Derek Fisher would be invaluable to this Lakers team. Huge signing no matter how you swing it (if it happens).
Just the voice of reason, experience, and intelligence will make this team twice what it was last season.
I don’t think this will be the last move by this organization, but it sure would be a great first move.
dELAMAR says
i would much rather pay the full mle and get a quality ball player , unless you got 2 solid players ( not likeley) to split the mle use it on one good one . splitting it has not been kind to the lakers
Derek Banducci says
Honestly, “overpaying” for D-Fish wouldn’t bother me. Suppose we give him the full MLE, that means we can’t go out and get another guy who’s worth half an MLE. Since we’re not going find a starter for half the MLE, signing D-Fish for all of it doesn’t really hurt us b/c we don’t need more bench players. Bottom line, D-Fish knows the offense, plays hard, and Kobe appears to like him, so he’s worth the money.
To contend, though, we obviously need some sort of KG/JO/Gasol trade.
gdchild says
Fisher isn’t the answer at the pg position.
Carter says
What’s with my post not showing up?
samu says
Fish alone will not be the answer, but combo of farmar-JCritt-Fish will be. i think we finally have our 1s and 2s set with Fish-JF-JCritt-KB-MoEvans, meaning sahsa is expenable in mitch’s mind. now looking back, drafting JCritt is not half bad at all.
so now lets hope mitch will do something to the front line.

3 years / 16M for D-Fish

Just Reading that ..
Lakers and Fisher were close to an agreement Tuesday night on a three-year contract, likely worth about $16 million
Also, Fisher changed agents over the weekend to be represented by Rob Pelinka, Bryant’s agent.
Dan says
That’s “most” of the MLE according to the article. How much of it is left?
