Several new additions have been made to the NBA and Lakers data spreadsheet that I’ve created and am updating daily.
Rookie Draft Tab
Want to quickly check and see how each draft pick has performed so far this season? Look no further than the “Rookie Draft” tab on the spreadsheet. You can sort by any of the columns, filter by team, and see just how elite Kyle Kuzma has been compared to the other rookies so far this season.
Projected Wins Tab
It’s hard to judge how well a team is playing just from wins and losses early in the year, so I’ve put together a win projection model based off of each team’s Points Over Expectation to show how well each team is playing.
This tab is call “Win Projections,” but take those with a grain of salt. Especially early in the year, these win projections are to show how well a team has played so far.
Will the Magic win 64 games this year? I don’t think so. But the model says that a team with an 11.7 POE over 82 games should win about 64 games. As they regress and their POE regresses, so will that win projection.
This tab also compares each team’s current win percentage with the expected win percentage based on their POE, shows the difference between those two, and will categorize teams as winning an “About Right” number of games based on their POE, show them as “Underperforming” and winning less than you’d expect them to, or “Overperforming,” and winning more than a team of their POE should be winning.
This is a great way to look at a team that may have lost a couple close games or has a tough strength of schedule and be able to see that they’re still actually playing well despite their record not showing so.
Projected Standings Tab
Based on those projected wins we have projected standings. Simplified and cleaned up a little, this is essentially the same data from the other tab.
Also included in this tab is the projected lottery standings, with each position’s odds at the top pick and odds at a top three pick based on their projected position.
Lakers Data For All
Each of these areas will be updated daily throughout the season to reflect the recently played games. I’ll make sure to share as more features are added, and will be using this data to write several Lakers data analysis articles throughout the season.
